The horned nose viper (Porthidium nasutum) is a venomous species of pit viper found in Central and South America. They are sometimes also called the Central American horned viper or the Central American lancehead.
These snakes have a distinctive, horn-like projection on the tip of their snout, which gives them their name. They have a thick, triangular head and a stocky body, which is usually about 1-2 feet in length. Their coloration can vary widely, but often includes shades of brown, gray, or green with darker blotches or stripes.
Horned nose vipers are primarily nocturnal and feed on small mammals, lizards, and birds. They are considered to be moderately venomous to humans, but fatalities from their bites are rare. Symptoms of envenomation can include swelling, pain, and bleeding, among others.
The horned nose viper is not considered to be a threatened species, but habitat loss and fragmentation are potential threats.
